Projects & Design Services

While I have a great deal of experience in the engineering and business world, what I truly specialize in is helping regular people - like you - bring their invention ideas to life. Every product you've ever held in your hands began as an idea in someones mind - this is where I come in. Ever had an idea for something, but had no idea how to go about creating it? I've assisted clients with a number of unique designs, to say the least! Below are a few  (definitely somewhat odd) examples:

Past Projects

The InstaCork

One of the more unique projects that I had the opportunity to assist with was an original concept design for a product that went on to be known as the "Instacork" (www.instacork.com).

The client was looking for a way to help bars with their number one nemesis in the industry: fruit flies. Keeping fruit flies out of bottles of alcohol, once they've been opened and had a spill-stop placed on them for easy pouring by drink-makers, is generally an unspoken top-priority behind a bar. Once a bottle is opened, a direct path for the flies to land on and crawl into is inadvertently created. However, once they get into the bottle and come into contact with the alcohol inside, they die and sink to the bottom. That bottle will then be used until it's gone, which is not only gross, it's also a health code violation. The Instacork created a small, angled cork that popped in and out of the end of the spill stop as it's turned over, then re-corks as the bottle is returned upright. An absolutely fascinating, necessary, and excellent product!

Mushroom House

Another unique project was a concept design for a "Mushroom House". My client was looking for a simple concept layout: a concrete, circular vacation rental house, shaped like a mushroom.

They wanted to develop a large, 'golf cart access only' community on a grassy knoll on the north shore of Maui, overlooking the ocean. The property was to include a large non-denominational Church, reception area, full-sized, gourmet kitchen, and on-site catering services.

Only the first floor is shown here for clarity, but this concept was to be replicated for every unit. It featured a platform kitchen, granite bar top, dining area, living room, built in entertainment system, washer & dryer, and a walk-in shower.

The second floor featured a balcony railing that overlooked the first floor, 'walk-thru' closet, oversized bed, entertainment center, as well as a spa-like hot tub, walk-in shower/sauna, and bidet etc.

International Space Station

Exercise Machine

This project was among the most unique of all. I had never heard of this sort of thing, but NASA holds a sort of 'design contest' as part of their 'InnoCentive' program, where any citizen can enter and submit their idea or concept for use on a specific project that they organize, and ultimately chooses a winner for. They establish and a set of standards and parameters, which participants must follow and are then judged on.

In this case, the challenge was to come up with a new type of exercise equipment to replace the old, heavy, wall-mounted gear that astronauts must use while in a zero gravity environment in order to maintain fitness. A smaller, portable system that fit into a specific cubic-foot arrangement was required, and the client wanted to enter this contest with his idea of using a series of vacuum tubes, cables, and pulleys. The imagery to the left may look odd, but this is concept idea that was submitted.

Modular Hockey Rink

This hockey rink was a unique one as well. While I was working on an Air Force Base in Kuwait, there was a shaded, covered concrete pad area that wasn't used very often, so the MWR (Morale, Welfare, & Recreation) team came up with the idea of putting a hockey rink on the site. However, it needed to be designed and constructed modular style, so they could be quickly disconnected and wheeled off of the surface if it was needed for any kind of ceremonial gathering. I came up with 6' modular sections that featured drop-wheels and connection bolts, meeting their requirements perfectly. This structure will remain on this airbase and be enjoyed by countless deployed military and civilian personnel alike for many years to come!

40 Megawatt Power Plant

This project was one of the largest I've ever done - a 40 megawatt power plant at the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. Pictures of this project are limited, as they were taken at a military installation. Be happy to tell you all about it sometime!

This project, broken down, involved the construction of a two-meters tall dirt berm, with flood mitigation, to house 20 generators and supporting office areas for operation personnel. Second part of the project was to GPS locate and survey about 13 kilometers of buried transmission cables, covering about 20% of the base.
